J. W. Lichty Custom Guitars & Ukulele
Jay W. Lichty is one of the very known luthier for guitars and ukulele. He is very famous for his Jazz-Guitars. To own an instrument built by him is something very special. Highest quality, fantastic tone and best playability are granted.
This particular Custom Cocobolo Baby Bard (Kiku) is most likely the most inspiring instrument we came accross. It's basically a small 6-string travel guitar in the size slightly bigger then a baritone ukulele. The scale is 20 inch.
Back and sides are made from beautifully structured Cocobolo. The red color seems brighter in the pictures than in reality. A mastergrade spruce top with bearclaw is bound by Koa. The design is called "double cutaway body" and the soundhole is not in the center but left and right to the fretboard. This model comes also with a side sound port.
The mahagony neck has a slotted headstock with fantastic Rubner tuners and the beautiful Lichty inlay. The radiussed Ebony fretboard is bound with Koa and Paua Abalone Position markers. The inlay around the soundhole is also from Paua Shell. A K&K Pickup makes this the perfect instrument for the stage too.
The building quality is on the highest level. The tone is breath taking clear and warm. The playability is extraordinary well. So much fun to play this instrument - you don't want to put it away.
We currently tuned it to Terz-Guitar tuning: G-C-F-B#-D-G (six to one). With a capo in 2. fret you'll get standard Ukulele tuning plus two bass strings. Other tunings like normal guitar (E-E) or Quint-Guitar (A-A) are possible with suitable strings.
This instrument is just amazing in every way. It comes with a solid hard-case.
